You may recall that one month ago, I shared an update [link to 6/6/26 E-News “The Call to Spiritual Solidarity”] about our meeting with the Mayor’s Office to advocate for funding for civil legal defense. We are happy to report that, for now at least, our prayers have been answered! The Mayor’s proposed budget reverses the proposed cuts and instead restores funding for general legal services back to $4.2M for the next two fiscal years. They also committed, in a less specific way, to dedicate money from another revenue stream to funding legal services as part of the city’s homelessness prevention strategy. This is exactly what we asked for. Praise God for this answer to prayer!

For the next month, the Board of Supervisors will review this proposed budget and continue to negotiate its terms. So our work is not done yet - here are three actions you can take to keep advocating:

1: Pray that these funding proposals make it into the finalized budget in July.

2: Thank your Supervisor for supporting civil legal defense as an effective homeless prevention strategy. Let them know that restoring the $4.2M for civil legal services is a wise and just investment of our taxpayer dollars, and that you are pleased to see it.

3: Send the Mayor a note of thanks too! Let him know we are paying attention to this issue and that we’re glad his administration heard our appeal.
