When Stevie Wonder turned his creative energy toward developing the landmark album that became Songs in the Key of Life, he had been under contract with Motown records for more than half his life. At 26, he was finally released from assembly line pop sounds to produce something of his very own. “Just because a man lacks the use of his eyes doesn’t mean he lacks vision,” he asserted. What emerged was a collection of music that spoke to the many volumes – and tempos – of life. As he gave voice to the breadth of his (and his people’s) struggles for spiritual and emotional emancipation–from advocating that “love’s in need of love” to urging us all to “have a talk with God” – whether he knew it or not, Stevie’s voice echoed poets and songwriters of old. Through seasons of orientation, disorientation, and reorientation, the Psalms give space for expressing our inner voice to the outer world. Whether we are experiencing joy and despair, hope and anger, peace and chaos; prayers for justice, salvation, comfort, or even vengeance, the life of faith comes in many pitches and tempos. At times, we might find ourselves unsure of whether we are “doing” faith right, or if we even have faith at all. In the Psalms, we find company in faithful voices which assure us that we are not alone. The journey of faith is one that features broad and diverse spiritual landscapes, so join us beginning this Sunday (10am online or at the Russian Center) for our new series, exploring how the Psalms have been written in the key of life so that we might speak and sing our faith with clarity and authenticity in every season.
Faithfully,
Pastor Emily
