A Place At The Table

On the day that Christians remember as Pentecost, faithful Jews of diverse backgrounds were gathered again in Jerusalem for The Festival of Weeks. It was also the day in which their collective self-understanding was radically reoriented and transformed through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The central certainties that the Torah provided – identity, order, and relationship with God – were no longer defined by origin or lineage but, rather by a profession of faith. With this, a new language of faith emerged; one that was invitational, inclusive, and led by a faithful willingness to enter into the mystery of God. For many of us Christians, this may not seem all that radical but for many of those gathered on that day, it was at once confusing, chaotic, and decentering. In our life together as City Church, we are carrying forward this faith language of invitation, inclusion, and inquiry through our recent Bay to Breakers outreach, crowd-sourced meals, and monthly BIPOC Kickback. Join us for the final Sunday of our sermon series, “Table Manners,” as we celebrate the gift of God’s spirit to the church and reflect on how she is moving among us in fresh, new, ways.

Faithfully,
Emily
