Dear City Church,
We’re writing with some good news and a praise report for our partners at Open Door Legal.
On June 25, the Board of Supervisors Budget and Appropriations Committee met to approve and amend the mayor’s proposed budget. After a long night — the meeting went past 2 a.m.! — supportive supervisors were able to negotiate a 70% restoration of funding for civil legal services for the coming year! These services make justice accessible to the most vulnerable residents of San Francisco, and are crucial to reducing homelessness and promoting dignity for all of our neighbors. Thanks be to God!
Obviously, this is not the full restoration we hoped for; and Open Door Legal still has to wait for their award letter to know exactly how much funding they can expect. But overall, the organization is on much steadier financial ground as a result of this decision. Above all, those who are most at risk of losing a voice and representation in circumstances of abuse, poverty, and homelessness will have a greater chance for a fair shot at justice. ODL is hopeful that God will use this process — with the media and board attention that was generated — to help them expand their network in the city and find new opportunities to grow their funding and serve more people.
To everyone who prayed, fasted, called supervisors, and showed up for the rally and for public comment: THANK YOU for your faithful partnership and support. Let’s give God thanks and praise, especially for:
Adrian’s committed leadership and the way that it inspired others to deepen their dedication to our most vulnerable neighbors
The hardworking staff and volunteers at Open Door Legal
City leaders who heard and acted on a clear call for justice in our community
The opportunity for our church to partner with other congregations in the city – across diverse theologies and ministries – to offer a clear and common call to caring for our most vulnerable neighbors.
And let’s continue to pray, especially for:
Adrian’s health, as he recovers from a two-week fast
The work of Open Door Legal, that they would remain encouraged and sustained in the ongoing work of defending and representing those who have been treated unjustly
Increased understanding of and support for legal aid’s role in fighting poverty in our community, and especially for those who are in positions of wealth or power to champion and pursue a more just legal structure with their actions and resources
For sustained support for Open Door Legal in coming years from city leadership
The day when God’s justice and vision of wholeness of life for all might be realized in fullness.
With gratitude for God’s faithfulness, mercy, and justice —
The Public Witness team
