Exempt

Commitment:

Part-time

Reports to:

Compensation:

Commensurate with experience

At City Church San Francisco, we aspire to be an inclusive community that follows Jesus with our heads, our heart, and our hands. Guided by our core beliefs, we pursue this with a commitment to anti-racist values, as we seek to introduce or reintroduce people to God and welcome everybody (believer and doubter, gay and straight, young and young at heart) right where they are; to offer something good and helpful to the world that promotes God’s vision of wholeness of life for all.

Position Overview:

We seek a worship co-leader/musician to engage the community in prayer and song with theological thoughtfulness, authenticity, and excellence. We are looking for someone who enjoys leading God's people in worship and helping people discover the countercultural joy of collective singing. Together, with another worship co-leader (instrumental), the co-leader (vocals) will be responsible for facilitating and energetically leading praise and worship during Sunday services and other key worship seasons and services (Advent - Longest Night, Christmas Eve; Lent - Holy Week, Easter), incorporating a variety of elements and styles that focus on welcoming and inspiring the church community into full participation in worship and faithful living. The ideal candidate will:

  • Enjoy working collaboratively with partners – other musicians, Pastor for Liturgical Arts, and congregants – to develop a musical aesthetic that creates a rich space for encountering God’s presence through song and sound.
  • Seek excellence in their craft and leadership while appreciating the richness of community contributions.
  • Understand the power of music and feels called to facilitate song to deepen faith and uplift the spirit

Essential Responsibilities/Duties to support City Church SF’s Mission:

1) Preparation for weekly Sunday services and occasional special services:

  • Communicate with pastor(s) on theme/sermon content for the week to co-create and co-lead a well-planned and prayerful worship service,
  • Collaborate with co-leader to choose and prepare songs that are theologically thoughtful, attentive to inclusion (gender, ability, LGBTQIA+), critically engaged, can be sung collectively, and would feed people most effectively as they worship together. 4-6 congregationally/collectively sung songs, 1-2 performed songs

2) Coordinate and oversee Sunday morning activities:

  • Rehearsal with vocalists, ensuring that vocalists are adequately prepared for worship (e.g. offering recordings of parts, distributing music in advance, coaching them, as needed);
  • Rehearsing and leading music for Sunday and special services with co-leader, contract vocalists, and volunteers;

3) Recruiting and overseeing vocalists:

  • Cultivate and maintain a strong network of relationships with area vocalists in the SF Bay Area who would participate in musical leadership with joy.
  • Encourage congregational participation
  • Organizing and leading a choir for occasional services (ie, Lessons and Carols, Easter Sunday)
  • Attention paid to size and diverse (gender identity, racial/ethnic, queer) representation in the make-up of the vocal leadership;
  • Oversee A/V leadership and functions alongside co-leader and Liturgical Arts Pastor (ensuring slides and projections, sound quality, etc.).

4) Cultivating team relationships:

  • Meeting weekly with site pastor and co-leader to ensure clear communication, planning, and alignment
  • Meeting (along with co-leader) monthly with volunteers and contract vocalists to ensure clear communication, planning, and alignment as well as offer feedback loops for improving the ministry
  • Alongside pastoral staff, meeting with interested congregants for semi-annual “worship roundtable” meetings to solicit feedback and ideas for ensuring that worship is reflective of church values and commitments
