Who gets to narrate your life?

Who gets to narrate your life? Who defines you?

Our work, relationships, academic credentials, incomes, titles, and more tend to frame our identities. We say, "I'm a broker," or "I'm an addict." We tell our stories by identifying the schools we attended and the relationships that accompanied us on the way. All of these are important, but not central. Our 'Egypts', in one sense, are insufficient identities, ways of defining our lives which will ultimately disappoint.

God's response: Let me tell you who you are.

On the Exodus journey, he retells their Story, this time with God as the central character, and his commandments as the way to human flourishing. Sure, he knows they'll fail again and again. But they need the Story. And they need the Law, a signpost to a promised new life of freedom. God wants to re-define our lives, re-narrate our stories. We've got to embrace his New Way if we're to expect significant change and the promised freedom he offers.
