Walking The Western Addition

THIS WEEKEND
Every town or city has its version of “the other side of the tracks” – the neighborhoods where “those” (poor, ethnic/racialized, uneducated, unrefined, etc.) people live. For Jesus and his contemporaries, Samaria was that place. Filled with not-Jewish-enough people of questionable morals, for generations, Samaria was shorthand for all the things a good Jew should not aspire toward. And so, for generations, there was hardly any meaningful dialogue between the two groups that didn’t devolve into the same old slurs and insults that led to a renewal of animosity. That is, until Jesus showed up at a well in Samaria and had a different kind of conversation. As we prepare for our first Lenten Prayer walk this Saturday in the Western Addition with partners from Open Door Legal, we’ll have an opportunity to learn about some challenging aspects of our city’s relationship with unjust housing policies and how that has laid the foundation for inequalities experienced today. Even as we hold the pain of this history, we will also have the opportunity to celebrate the ways in which that history also tells the story of creative resistance and resilience, while also imagining a different kind of future for us all. Note that these walks are intended for all ages – our Children’s Ministry Director, Barbara Lyon, will be joining us with spiritual practices to help our younger walkers participate! Because space is limited and we want to know who to contact in the event of a rain cancellation, register for all the walks here.

THANK YOU, MANNY!
We are so grateful to have hosted Manny Yekutiel this past Sunday. If you’ve not yet had a chance to hear Manny’s story you can catch up on the Sermon at our YouTube Page or on all Podcast Platforms.  Also, don’t forget to join Manny’s Civic Corps, launching on April 1st!  The first project will be repairing and restoring the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park.
