Unguarded

Am I a dad? Am I a husband? Am I a son? Or am I a junkie? These where the questions Chris Herren, an NBA star had to face after drug addiction destroyed his career and family. He discovered the answers to these questions not under the bright lights on an NBA court but in front of endless pile of dirty dishes in a residential recovery program. Day after day he washed dishes in a tiny little room and found redemption. The documentary film, Unguarded, produced by ESPN chronicles the turbulent life of Chris Herren. His story exposes pain and sorrow of one man's extreme success and self-hatred. Chris Herren gives an unflinching raw look into his story of false success, self-hatred and his hard fought road to recovery from drug addiction.

His story is similar to those we support in CityTeam ministries. Men who know the pain and destruction that drug and alcohol brings to those trapped in addiction. Addiction affects every communal connection it touches—the person with the disease, the family members who loves them and the cities they inhabit. The devastating communal effects of addiction are apparent to anyone who walks the streets of San Francisco. CityTeam offers a way out for men who's addictions have brought to them to relational and financial bankruptcy. As men and women find the redemption of recovery they must do the hard internal and external healing. Rebuilding communal support around them is crucial. This is where the City Hope Adult Mentorship Program (CHAMP) enters the picture. As addicts rebuild the bridges around them, they need trustworthy friends, friends who will listen well, pray for them often and help them to achieve their life dreams. After the film, we will discuss this important ministry and how it benefits all who participate in it.
