Praying Twice

It has been said that “the one who sings prays twice.” And, indeed, scripture shows how music, poetry, and prayer have intertwined to not only deepen our worship but express the full spectrum of human experience. Whether it is fear, gratitude, or awe, songs, hymns, and spiritual songs are a vehicle which enable us to drop deeper into our spirits and give voice to the depths of our emotions. Beginning this Sunday, we’ll explore what it means to pray twice through the gift of song and the raising of our collective voices (in the spirit of Anne Lamott) to pray Help! Thanks! and Wow! to God. We’ll begin our series and kick off Black History Month with guest preacher, the RevAdam Mixonand guest vocalist, Pastor Adrienne Mixon in reflecting on our song of focus, “Lift Every Voice And Sing.”

Each week we will discuss a key concept in the Christian faith and then reflect on how it intersects with our lived experiences. Along the way, you’ll also learn about City Church and our various ministries. This is a great step toward joining the membership of City Church. Registration Requested: Lunch and childcare will be provided!

Ash Wednesday, Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent, a stretch of the church calendar marked by self-examination, reflection, and spiritual renewal. On Ash Wednesday, we are marked with a cross on the forehead, made of ashes. This reminds of our connection to creation and to God. We hope you’ll join us for our Ash Wednesday service as we begin the journey of Lent. If you are going to join us remotely and would like to make Ashes at Home we can mail you a kit for you to participate at home. Send Jason an email with your address by Sunday, February 12th.
