I See You

As I began planning our current sermon series with some of the LGBTQIA folks at City Church, someone mentioned how powerful it was to see a queer person in leadership, mentioning a speech about Hope by Harvey Milk. And yet, the rise of visibility also involves risk. Whether it is the removal of Rep. Zooey Zephyr from the Montana House Chamber or the Human Rights Campaign declaring a state of emergency on behalf of LGBTQ+ Americans, there is a correlation between violence and visibility. As the disciples and early Christians began to find their voice and use it in ways that proclaimed and cast a vision for a more expanded way of being, they experienced that same kind of heightened risk, as they caught the attention of religious leaders. It wasn’t long before threats and intimidation followed. Visibility matters. It threatens the status quo. It not only serves as a model and affirmation of dignity and worth for those who are disregarded and dismissed, it also contributes to a transformed collective social imagination. Diverse faces and experiences shift from the exception to, well, if not the rule, then at least not the exception which, in turn, expands our imaginations for what is possible. This Sunday, we will explore the power of queer visibility, welcoming Emily Hansen Curran, founder of the Sunday Night Service in Berkeley, as we continue to explore the life and community of early Christians in the Book of Acts.

Faithfully,
Pastor Emily

CITY CAMP RECAP

Thank you to everyone who came out to support City Camp 2023! We had 27 campers, 9 Youth Junior Counselors, and 18 Adult Counselors for 7 hours of in-TENTS camping INSIDE the Russian Center. We also had a host of Toddler families who stopped by to visit the petting zoo and the fire truck. Everyone had a blast! Thank you for praying and supporting this great event! And keep your eyes peeled for next year’s camp.
