Whether hosted by elite religious and political leaders, outcasts, or poor folks, it was often at tables over broken bread, where Jesus did some of his best work. It was also around tables where people were transformed in relationship to one another and with God. While Jesus was usually the guest, he often hosted space for the gathered to share stories, engage in debate, and build community in ways that expanded everyone’s imagination for what it could look like to embody the kinship of God’s people. It was through these unique table manners that a deeper understanding of what it means to live into God’s vision was cracked open. Tables are also the place where flavors are embedded and enfolded into the hopes, disappointments, and perseverance that shape the many and varied experiences of many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. “A.A.P.I. Heritage” is less a monolith than it is a collection of diverse stories, woven together by legacies of hope and sacrifice, which find their fullest expression at God’s table, where all are invited to pull up a seat and be part of a future where all can be nourished.
Faithfully,
Pastor Emily
