Rhonda Wilson

Elder

I moved to San Francisco a little before Easter 2011 for a job in research at Dolby Labs, began attending City Church the day after I landed at SFO and became a member later that year. I was attracted by the music, the Jesus-centered bible teaching and a warm welcome at Maundy Thursday supper, which led to me joining a community group near the accommodation Dolby had booked for me downtown.

My faith journey began as a child growing up in a Christian family in Sydney, Australia, going to the local Anglican church, singing in the choir, being part of the youth group. Church, music, math and science were all a big part of my family’s life. I studied electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics at Sydney University, and worked in Sydney for a year after graduating before moving to England to take up a research job in an audio company there. A couple of years after moving to England I joined a church in Cambridge where I feel my spiritual life really moved forward. I enjoyed wonderful biblical teaching from the clergy, and from academics in a whole range of scientific disciplines, and most importantly joined a home group with people who patiently answered my many questions and clearly demonstrated God’s love. I worked in the audio industry throughout my years in the UK and now here I lead Dolby’s sound technology research teams based in San Francisco and Sydney. I love combining math, music and science, people skills and technical skills in my work, seeing how as people made in the image of God we can work together, analyze, invent and create. I deeply value time in nature, enjoying spiritual and physical refreshment especially while hiking in the many beautiful and magnificent places God has given us.

After making my home in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood, I’ve been a member of and co-led two community groups in Cole Valley/Forest Hill and the Richmond neighborhoods, been part of the ushering team, done the Newbigin Fellowship, in 2014/15 and in 2020/21 when the fellowship changed name to the Faith and Justice Fellowship, and the Midlife Spirituality course. City Church has changed a lot during these years, especially as we strive to be truly inclusive, and I deeply value the community, space and resources City Church has provided for my own spiritual growth, a place to ask challenging questions of myself and others, to better understand how deeply God loves each one of us and desires us to thrive. There is more change ahead of us and I prayerfully seek the ways in which God will continue to enable and equip City Church as we endeavor to follow Christ in loving and healing San Francisco. I am honored to be nominated for the Elder Board.
