Position Overview:

We seek a leader for Service, Justice, and Community Building to facilitate opportunities for our community to build relationships, serve each other, and serve our city in ways that are guided by key partnerships, informed by a critical analysis of community change, and articulated by faith commitments. The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a deep love for San Francisco and an understanding of the nuances that shape the economic, political, socio-logical, and cultural landscape of the city
  • Have enthusiasm for building institutional partnerships with other organizations for collective power-building and contribution to the common good Be a “prophet with the heart of a priest:” Possess a critical analysis and understanding of systemic oppression and injustice, paired with a critically engaged faith that is informed by the life and ministry of Jesus.


Essential Responsibilities/Duties to support City Church SF’s Mission:

1) Participation and presence in worship services:

  • Serve in rotation with other pastoral staff for leadership in liturgy, eucharist, occasional preaching, and other responsibilities as needed
  • Leads coordination for “Service + Fellowship” Sundays with key partners
    Collaborate with other staff to support the planning and implementation of worship life


2) Congregational Engagement

  • Meeting with newcomers and connecting them to relevant groups or opportunities to participate in the life of the church
  • Cultivate processes for congregants to assess their spiritual gifts and serve the life of the community
  • Recruit, train, coordinate and support greeting, communion, along with additional teams that are relevant for congregational life
  • Create opportunities for praxis of faith and service/justice to occur; reflecting on participation in various service/justice events through a lens of spiritual learning


3) City Engagement

  • In partnership with the Senior Pastor and with guidance from the Elder Board: determining a strategy for city engagement that reflects the priorities and resources of the church in relationship with needs of the city
  • Cultivate external relationships with key service and justice organizations in the city to understand the organizational landscape of the city and build sustained partnerships
  • Identify, recruit, and train lay leaders for leading ongoing service opportunities
  • Teach and assist congregants in making connections between issues of the city and faith, providing pathways for service, engagement, and contribution to the common good
  • Working with partners to develop opportunities for congregants to increase civic knowledge and engagement
    Supports Director of Evangelism in outreach efforts  


4) Community Life Support

  • Coordinating and cultivating leaders for congregant-led events
  • Developing programming to facilitate connections (ie, life kit events, game nights, fellowship Sundays, etc, and supporting colleagues with additional education events)
  • Support Director of the Counseling Center with deacon-related needs


5) Cultivating team relationships and feedback loops:

  • Meet regularly with pastor to ensure clear communication, planning, and alignment
  • Collaborate with relevant staff (Director of Family Ministries, Youth, Counseling Center, Faith and Justice) to develop programs and opportunities for equipping congregants to live and serve faithfully

Minimum Qualifications  

Education + Experience:

  • At least 3 years working in community building
  • Knowledge of San Francisco – needs, networks, organizations and organizational leaders
  • Has experience with approaches for community organizing and an understanding of powerbuilding for change
