Position Overview:
We seek a leader for Discipleship to facilitate opportunities for our community grow in both knowledge and faith through 1) Engaging the questions of the Christian faith, facilitating opportunities for Bible study, theological understanding, and engaging relevant topics of the day so that congregants can make connections between current realities, life circumstances, and how to navigate them faithfully. 2) Facilitating opportunities for spiritual growth through organizing and/or leading spiritual practices that deepen a sense of connection to God and expand the imaginations of congregants of how God shows up in our lives and the world. The ideal candidate will:
- Have an enthusiasm for learning and teaching scripture, theology, and engaging current events through a lens of faith
- Have a sense of call to create spaces for theological exploration and transformative spiritual growth that is critically engaged, Biblically-informed, and attentive to the inclusion of congregants from diverse backgrounds and stages of faith
Essential Responsibilities/Duties to support City Church SF’s Mission:
1) Participation and presence in worship services:
- Serve in rotation with other pastoral staff for leadership in liturgy, eucharist, occasional preaching, and other responsibilities as needed
- Collaborate with other staff to support the planning and implementation of worship life (ie, liturgical seasons, sermon series, special services, etc.)
2) Programming for learning and spiritual growth
- Meet regularly with congregants to listen and learn about the spiritual questions, needs, and challenges being faced
- Develop, design, and/or oversee the implementation of classes, workshops, and other learning experiences that are relevant to the season of life in church and attentive to the spiritual locations of congregants (ie, new to church vs. life-long Christian)
- Develop, design, and/or oversee the implementation of classes, workshops, and other opportunities for learning and engaging in spiritual practices that deepen faith and open spaces for encountering God’s presence
3) Coordinate and Resource Community and Affinity Groups
- Discern opportunities for new community and affinity groups to form and coordinate with congregants for viability
- Recruit, train, and support community group leaders, equipping them with skills for cultivating hospitable spaces for authentic community building with confidence and compassion
- Regularly checking in with group leaders, offering coaching, resources for study, pastoral support
4) Cultivating team relationships and feedback loops:
- Meet regularly with pastor to ensure clear communication, planning, and alignment
- Collaborate with relevant staff (Director of Family Ministries, Youth, Counseling Center, Faith and Justice) to develop programs and opportunities for equipping congregants to live faithfully
