From Tuesday through Thursday last week, Barbara Lyon, our Children’s Ministry Director, joined 177 other Children’s Ministry leaders at the Children’s Spirituality Summit 2024. She heard over twenty-two presentations and keynotes presenting research and work in a variety of areas touching on children’s faith formation. Dr. Henry Zonio talked about how the church’s “null” curriculum socializes children into systems of inequality. Dr. David Scott presented his work on the gifts children bring to community, which cannot be refused, and which insist on a cycle of exchange. And Rev. Dr. Tanya Marie Eustace Campen gave her research on how fear and stress are handed down through the family to create anxiety in our youngest generations. Barbara and the Children’s Ministry leaders will be considering all this and more. If you would like to join in on the discussions, please email Barbara@citychurchsf.org. Also, observe the children in our midst on Sunday morning. Consider how they are discovering and practicing their roles in our worshipping community. Consider how they are being knit into the collaborative memory of our identity as the body of Christ.
