Daily Reading
Reflection
It's tempting in our day to do everything to get to the top. It's been this way for millennia. Brothers kill each other for a throne. Lovers betray one another for a fleeting high. Those in power attempt to gain more control. But not Jesus. Jesus went low. He went for the feet. While other "messiahs" vied for allegiance and authority, Jesus abandoned glory, forfeited power, and went low—for the feet, the place of dishonor.
He was modeling something very powerful for the disciples in this Scripture passage. He was embodying an ethic of selfless love. For Jesus, the way up was the way down. For us, the ethic of Jesus may seem counter-intuitive and counter-cultural, but God promises all His best for those who choose it. Lent is a time to go low. It's a time to bless. It's a time to serve. You may find that you receive much more than you ever expected in return.
Humble God, I ask you to create in me a deeper humility. It's difficult, because everything in the world tells me to promote myself. Give me the courage to walk in the way of Jesus. In Jesus' name, Amen.
