I grew up in Malaysia with a deep Christian heritage handed down from both sides of my family. Some of my earliest memories: playing hide and seek with friends at church, or eating barbecue at community group cookouts. After I lost my father when I was eighteen, I struggled with my faith for years, drifting in and out of Christian community. "God, help my unbelief!" was the cry of my heart for years. Slowly, through countless conversations with friends and family, lots of journal pages, and many silent meditations, I began to believe in a God who loves and fights for us -- all of us. My husband, Matt, and I were active members of The Way Berkeley for several years, including hosting the San Francisco community group. After having kids, we started looking for a church community in San Francisco to belong to. We began attending City Church in 2023. Because of my experiences, I believe deeply in the power of community on our shared journey towards salvation. When I first heard in City Church's worship: "Our salvation is bound up together", I thought: this is a community I'd like to belong to. Since then, Matt and I lead the Glen Park community group while I actively volunteer in children's ministry. We are glad to raise our kids (5 and 2) in this inclusive, ever-growing, unique community that always seeks to serve Jesus with our heads, hearts, and hands. I'm honored to be nominated for diaconate, and feel the weight of serving the needs of this diverse community in this new season of our church life. May we walk together through fire and water into God's glorious abundance.
