Irene Lee

Elder Candidate

I was born in Chicago but raised in Taiwan in a very religious family who centered life around our family church.  I attended schools for missionary kids, but wrestled with the conservative and somewhat ethnocentric views espoused. I found myself inwardly rejecting what was presented as Christianity, even as I dutifully memorized the Bible and participated in all that was required at school and church. I dipped my toe into church and campus fellowships when I attended college in the Midwest and later graduate school in the Bay Area, but again did not feel entirely comfortable with certain tenets and values.  It was not until I moved to San Francisco in 1991 that I felt invited to deconstruct and reconstruct faith in a way that felt genuine and open-handed.  My husband Lance and I joined an intentional community church in the Mission district, and raised our three kids: Alexandra, Caleb, and Sami, in that very special setting.  We joined City Church in 2010 and have been privileged to travel with this church through all of its iterations, joys, and challenges.  During that time, my involvement in leading and participating in community groups, volunteering in children’s ministry, serving at City Hope, and being a Newbigin fellow have all deepened my ties to this evolving community and have shaped and strengthened my faith.  I am excited by where I see City Church today and where we are going, and have deep appreciation for this group of people who continue to serve and care for each other, and who strive to nurture a space for healing, growth, exploration, and diversity of perspectives. I would love to aid the church in continuing to strengthen our community and faith as we grow and deepen our commitment to each other and to serving our city.
