Daily Reflection
This tense dialogue between Jesus and those who challenged him shows Jesus a bit exasperated. Earlier his questioners had claimed to know all about him and dismissed him as not-the-Messiah—though some claimed he was. There are those in the crowd who believe; Jesus ultimately challenges them to stay true to what they believe and enjoy freedom with him. But, in talking with those who can't seem to get past their assumptions about "how things are supposed to be" he talks about death and sin. The irony in his words is that he recognizes that it will be only at the time of his own death—"when you have lifted up the Son of Man"—that the truth will dawn on them.
Jesus speaks here with an urgency we—and his original listeners—don't want to hear. His is not a calm debate on fine points of morality or theology—there's a sense that today's the day and if you don't listen up and recognize the words of life, you are actually choosing to remain in the darkness of your own assumptions and worldview. There's a sense that in the face of Jesus' personal revelation we must abandon intellectual and spiritual invulnerability and walk into the light. Are you willing?
Suggested Prayer: Lord, give me ears to hear your Spirit speak truth to me, give me the willingness to change towards an embrace of your truth.
