Chris Nyffeler

Elder Candidate

My wife Anne and I have two children (Johnny, 14 and Hope, 10). We've been members of City Church for 19 years, since 2006. We’ve continued to make City Church our home even after moving out of San Francisco to Marin in 2021.

At work, I’m a Director for User Experience at YouTube. I’m passionate about using design to improve the way people use technology in their everyday lives.

I grew up with parents who worked for Campus Crusade for Christ, an organization that ministers to college students around the world. Because of this, I lived in a number of places in my early life, including California, Colorado, Russia and Florida.

Though I grew up in a Christian home, my faith became my own when I was about 16. A passage from Matthew 25 had a particular influence on me. Jesus tells a parable of the sheep and the goats. Like a shepherd who separates sheep from goats, Jesus will separate out those who fed and clothed those in need, those sick or in prison. By serving those in need, the sheep were serving Jesus himself. This—along with influence from a mentor at the time—opened a fresh aspect of the gospel to me and showed me that, at its core, Jesus’ message was about loving the unloved and forgotten, and doing so through authentic relationships.

City Church has helped me discover opportunities to better align to that parable from Jesus, namely, my time with San Francisco inmates in County Jail from 2014–2019, but also as a Community Group leader for thirteen years, being a part of the diverse struggles of people living and working in San Francisco. I served a previous term on the Elder Board from 2015–2017, as City Church navigated major changes within our congregation and with the broader RCA denomination.

Living in the Bay Area, God has opened my heart to the often forgotten populations here—be it inmates, foster children, or LGBTQIA+. I’ve come to believe strongly that God is doing a great work in San Francisco and I’m thrilled to be a small part of His work here in this city.
