Advent Sermon Series

Listening for God

Mary is our model of readiness to hear God’s voice, God’s direction, God’s call.  From the Annunciation telling her she would bear the Son of God, to her cousin supporting her in solidarity, to Mary finding her own voice of aligning with God’s call, she listens, and she responds. Not only Mary but Joseph as well, as he listens to God in his dream. Advent is about listening, waiting, and then responding with the clear call of God upon our lives. Franciscan priest Richard Rohr says in his book Preparing for Christmas:

If Jesus is the symbol of the gift itself and how God gives the gift, then Mary is the symbol of how the gift is received and treasured. There is no mention of any moral worthiness, achievement, or preparedness in Mary, only humble trust and surrender. Mary does not manage, fix, control or “perform” in any way. She just says “yes!” and brings forth the abundance (of what the prophets had promised).
